Naltrexone

Naltrexone is an FDA-approved opiate blocker, which means that it completely blocks the euphoric effects of opiates such as heroin and prescription pain pills. It is also used to treat alcohol use disorders. It can come in an injectable (Vivitrol) or pill (ReVia, Depade) form.

The goal of the naltrexone medication-assisted treatment (MAT) program at Newsong Recovery is to helps patients overcome alcohol and opioid addiction by blocking the euphoric effects and feelings of drugs and alcohol.

Patients taking naltrexone who relapse while the medication is present in the body will not get high. Without a high being received by the brain, and with the great reduction in cravings naltrexone delivers, recovery can be achieved.

A Full Recovery

The ultimate goal of naltrexone MAT is full recovery, including the ability to live a self-directed life. Naltrexone has been shown to:

● Improve patient survival

● Increase retention in treatment

● Decrease illicit opiate and alcohol use and other criminal activity among people with substance use disorders

● Increase patients’ ability to gain and maintain employment

Naltrexone isn’t prescribed in isolation. It’s one component of a comprehensive recovery program designed to address the patient’s individual needs.

What to Expect with Naltrexone

Newsong Recovery’s naltrexone medication-assisted treatment program is closely supervised by a team of physicians with more than 35 years of experience using the latest evidence-based approaches to manage the symptoms of withdrawal when a person is in treatment detoxing and as part of an ongoing maintenance plan to manage cravings.

At Newsong Recovery, your treatment will begin with a comprehensive assessment to determine if you are an ideal candidate for medication-assisted treatment with naltrexone. You must abstain from opioids for a minimum of seven to 10 days before starting naltrexone. Long-term naltrexone therapy extending beyond three months is considered most effective by researchers, and therapy may also be used indefinitely.

Naltrexone, in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies, provides a whole-patient approach to treatment.
